Speaking of the Miramichi: Despite the economic slump, salmon lodges on the Miramichi did very well this year.

Cains River Stripper
Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Nice trout pic but I notice we have a stripper here also . The taped fingers
tell the tale of a guy that fishes Cains late fall in slow water for salmon
and realizes that the fly has to move a little quicker , thus the need to
strip , resulting in sore finger tips , especially if it is raining like it
was on the 15th . Casting directly upriver and stripping as the fly floats
close to the bottom is an old trick too .

2010 Season comes to a close
Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

We wrapped up the 2010 season with great weather , water and a good run of salmon . The Miramichi was spotty the last two weeks but some great fishing for many anglers . The Upper Cains was a disappointment in general , great water most of the time but slow fishing for the most part. The last day was a real treat with heavy rain and wind , for myself it was also fishless .

October 11th Update
Monday, October 11th, 2010

800DSC03345.jpg
Keep the faith folks, as expected fishing is improving . EJ and Ethan landed a nice 15 pound hook-bill yesterday that was fresh in , no sea lice but Ej figures it was only a day or two in the system . Last evening they saw even more fish , all high up in pool , indicating they were on the move . The wind is forecast to be much lighter these next few days so combine the beautiful fall sun shine , water dropping and fresh fish moving anglers can wrap up the 2010 season on a high note .

Fall Fishing Miramichi & Cains
Sunday, October 10th, 2010

800DSC03366.jpg
The water is still a little too high for the Miramichi but the strong west wind is the main problem these last couple of days .It is almost impossible to get a decent cast out and when you do you have to put up with the leaves coming off the trees into the water . We are seeing a good number of fish but hook-ups are few . The Cains is still really high so there is not much action on the headwaters yet . As the water drops and the leaves clear out this week we expect things to improve on both rivers .

Wilson’s October 6th Report
Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

IMGP0182.jpg
Weird thing , we were on the Cains three days ago on perfect water , no salmon but high hopes for this week . Joe and two guests floated again today from Leighton Brook to Hopewell and were surprised to find the water a little too low for a canoe trip and still no sign of salmon . I personally fished Leighton and Blue Rock this afternoon and did not see a thing . Rain coming tonight could be just what we need to kick things in gear on the Cains , but we do not want a rise for the Miramichi though , it is just right here . Fishing is slow most days but it seems like every few hours it turns on for an hour or so just to keep us in business . EJ and Eric landed a nice 16 pound hen this morning , bumped several more fish then struck out in the afternoon . It seems like there is just enough action to keep everyone ineterested . Of course knowing that you could be next in line for a 30 pound salmon always helps with the interest level too .

Fall fishing Miramichi & Cains
Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

bill-ej-w-41-incher
The water is coming down nicely on the Miramichi but still a little high . We are seeing plenty of fish and hook-ups are frequent , but short . Most takes are short pulls so you have to be on the ball and ready to set . The big spey rods are great for casting long lines but if you are just learning to spey then leave it on the shore for this kind of fishing . The guides notice a big difference in success with the single handed rod this week . Our big fish of the week was a nice 41 inch “fresh-run” hen taken on a sinking line and large streamer . Most of the other fish were dark .
The Cains ( headwaters ) is still good for water but not much happening yet as for numbers . Joe is doing a float trip there today with two guest’s so we will know better tonight .

Fall Salmon report for Cains & Miramichi
Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

The big rain came through last night , lucky for us we only got about 25mm in Doaktown . The Miramichi at McNamee came up app. 10 inches and is very red and full of leaves . It will be interesting to see if the Miramichi turns on again after this rise . Even though hook-ups were few today we have encouraging reports from the guides about the number of big fish sightings this afternoon .The Cains looks about the same as for height and dirt . The Cains has been reporting good fishing in the Shinnickburn area all week so we hope to see some decent fishing in the headwaters soon. The headwaters area is always tough to predict , even with good water they sometimes don’t show up till after the season .
