We had rain for the last 24 hours and as expected the water is rising fast . What little bit of ice left should be clear by the weekend . We have not had a lot of precipitation these last few months so the rain is welcome , even if it means an early ice out . There is no way to tell what kind of late spring and summer we will have but we are all praying for another rainy cool summer like 2009 .

There is nothing too exciting about the ice-run so far . The weather is cool so the water remains low . The ice is thin so as the water backs up a little it does not take much for it to wear through , as seen in this picture at Big Murphy Pool . The main channel is open on most sections of the river so with a little rain and warm weather the river should be clear well in advance of opening day . But , the weather forecast for the next two days is for snow flurries and cold temps below normal at -16c. Rain coming early next week though .

Ice- run update for the Miramichi River at McNamee for March 22. The warm weather over the weekend moved more ice . The river is not on a fast rise yet but with the light ice it will not take much to move it along . As these little ice jambs form the water will build behind it creating more and more force . We are forecast to get a little snow on Tuesday with cooler temps .

By the looks of the river in the McNamee area we are in for an early ice-out this year . With the light ice build up this winter and now the warm weather the ice will most likely be gone well before opening day on the 15th of April . There are many theories of course about what this means for the fishing but I am going with most old- timers that say the fish will remain in the river until the water warms up and the smelt run has started in . One thing for sure is that with an early ice -out the river should be clear of heavu ice and other debris , which of course makes for much more pleasant day on the water . There is no way to predict what flys to use because one never knows what the water level will be four weeks from now .
Stay tuned for pictures of the ice as it moves out , we always get a big run-off sometime during this period and it can be quite a sight .
