Young Braden Tierney has a lot to smile about after his very first Atlantic Salmon fishing trip . Braden not only hooked his first ever Atlantic salmon he also broke our camp record with this beautiful 51 inch hen . I am not sure who was more excited , his guide Karl Wilson or his mom and dad ( Tom and Karen ) . We are not sure of the weight so we welcome any comments you might have to help us determine that . At present the river conditions are near perfect , the water cooled off here on the weekend and with the 6 inch raise we are seeing plenty of fish in our larger holding pools . (more…)
Atlantic salmon fly-fishing conditions for the Miramcihi River near McNamee as of August 24th . Conditions have improved as a result of the rain over the weekend . Hurricane Bill missed us but we got enough rain to bring the river up app 4 inches and of course cooled things down nicely . The fish will likely remain in their cold water sanctuaries but should be on the take today . The weather forecast for this week is ideal with cooler temps . It should be noted that our single best week of the summer in 2008 was the last week of August , probably a fluke but still worth keeping an eye on the river with the present conditions .
The water is down to normal summer level but still in good shape . The hot weather this last week has moved the fish into our cold water holding pools and of course more difficult to get a fish to come for a fly . Cloudy skys today and rain forcest for the weekend should turn the fish on again . Bombers are the order of the day for this time of the year .
Before every outing, there’s a little something in every salmon fisherman’s mind that thinks this might be the day. When all the conditions come together and you’re at the right place at the right time. Of course, most days we catch less than what we hoped for–water too high, too low, too warm, too cold, fish not here yet, run already went through…. but there are certain times when all the stars are aligned. Atlantic Salmon fly-fishing conditions at Wilson’s on the Miramichi River for August 8th . The water is still high but we have cool temps and fresh -run salmon on the move . One lucky angler yesterday hooked three salmon ( 12-18 lb ) and two grilse bringing four fish to the net . One of the salmon and one grilse were bright and silver . Not sure if it made the difference or not but Steve was using a 15 foot two handed spey rod , maybe covering more water gave him the advantage . Everyone in camp had a great day seeing fish and at least rolling one or two . We have three days of showers on the way so lets hope it does not come down too heavy . Best fly yesterday was my old favorite , the green machine with white calf tail .
Atlantic salmon fly-fishing conditions for the Miramichi River at McNamee for August 4th . The river is still high this morning ( app.18inches ) An interesting thing we noticed this time is that the water remains very red in color . It is most noticeable in a spring water bogan in front of my house that is app20 inches deep and normally “gin clear” , the water level has dropped off in it but the rocks on the bottom are covered with a dark red colored silt . My question is where did all this come from and what impact will it have on the health of the river . Somewhere in the headwaters last week we got a huge rain resulting in a big run-off of red colored ( tanic ) mud . My theory is is that the watershed is so saturated that the black swamps and barrens are overflowing with tanic colored water . The Cains River is very dark in color for this same reason. So, maybe we have to change our tactics this week on the Miramichi .
