Atlantic Salmon fly-fishing conditions for the Miramichi River at McNamee as of June 30th, 2009 . Well folks just when you thought we could not get any more rain , down it comes again . Heavy rain today is bringing the water up again this evening but the forecast for the next four days is only showers . This is great for the fish but tough on anglers . We are not seeing many fish yet and this seems to be the storey all over but we expect as things settle down that we are in for some great fishing . You will probably never hear a guide complain about too much water at this time of the year , it is better than a draught for sure and big water helps move in the fish .
Hi Chris-
Good to hear from you . I agree , not that great of fishing with all this high water but sure is helpful for the trout . I had a few really good days on the Cains then the water came up and moved the trout around , great . It seems like there are fewer trout this year but hard to tell really with the high water .
I am considering launching a petition to (more…)
Atlantic salmon fly-fishing conditions for the Miramichi River at McNamee as of June 24th . We are pleased to report another perfect raise of water . The general population are all complaining about the dreary , cold , rainy weather but anglers are enjoying every minute of it . The locals picked up a few big hen salmon last week but nothing on the high water these last few days The water is still up about 12 inches and dropping slow , which is tough for this week but it boads well for the coming weekend and beyond . Big flys and a sink tip line might work best for a few more days .
We had a nice raise of water on the Cains again this past weekend so John and I decided to take the 28 foot jet canoe for a fishing tour . The first person to correctly identify the pool we are in will win one day for two rods on the Miramichi on one of Wilson’s private pools . I will post a new hint each day or so until the winner is declared . Contest will run for 5 days .
After a big raise of water last weekend conditions on the Cains this week appear to be almost perfect . I fished the Upper Cains on Wed night and Thursday am with very poor results . I walked from Lower Ledge to Wildcat , unfortunately in the hot sun , but even at Birch Landing around 8 pm with the sun off the water and no wind , I did not see a single fish . I also fished a few secret pockets with nothing . Karl managed to land three decent trout at Wildcat right at dark but not many fish showing . Could be because of the hot weather that day but I suspect that the raise of water probably moved a lot of the trout out of the holding pools into better feeding areas , which gives them a much needed break for sure .
Atlantic Salmon fly-fishing conditions for the Miramichi River near Wilson’s for June 17th . This picture shows a salmon from June 2008 , this is what you can expect this week on the Miramichi if you put your time in . The water is perfect and there are reports of fresh fish on the move . It does not appear to be a big run just yet but for a couple of my neighbors yesterday they have no complaints , (more…)
The Miramichi is in superb condition this morning . We had a couple days of rain that soaked things up real good and brought the river up app. 15 inches . This is the perfect rise at the perfect time . The air temps are still cool , as a matter of fact I had to have a fire on in the wood stove at Leighton two nights this past week . There are reports of a few salmon being picked up so it looks good for next week , and beyond as long as the weather treats us right . If I was heading to the river today I would use a # 6 green machine with white calf tail .
I took a drive to Wildcat last night to see how the water was with all the heavy rain , and as expected it was up app. 18 inches and still coming fast . This will mess up the fishing for the next few days but should bring more fish into the system, or at least move the present ones around some . As usual poor old Wildcat and Acadia Bridge pools are getting pounded again this year so this raise of water will be a relief for the trout for sure .
Sorry for the delay in getting this out folks , but it is hard to type when your hands are all wet and slippery from handling big trout on the Cains . In brief the run does not appear to be as good as the previous two years but we are getting into some nice fish just the same . I fished Rt 123 Bridge and Hopewell Sunday night with one nice fish at Hopewell . (more…)
Our crew done a float trip Wed 3rd from Rt 123 bridge to Duffy Brook on near perfect water and warm temps . We picked up the usual 6- 10 inch trout but no sign of the big boy’s yet . Three of the guy’s are continuing on to Shinnickburn today so maybe they will hit the run further down river . It was the perfect night for tenting-out , windy enough to keep the bugs away all evening plus very cool overnight with frost so no bugs during breakfast either . Despite the fact that we did not touch a fish these trips are some of the best .
