miramichi-trout.jpg
The water and weather conditions are perfect this week which helps with the annual migration of the Upper Miramichi River Sea-run brook trout run . Unfortunately this beatiful specimen took the fly down into the gills and was bleeding badly . He was nearly dead by the time I netted it so I took this one home. He will not be cut up and put in a frying pan , he will be proudly displayed on the wall allong side my late fathers trouphy trout caught in 1976 . This is the first big trout I have killed in many years and I hope it will be the last . Please release all of these very special fish , they need all the help we can offer them .
I am running a housekeeping cabin special the next three weeks where you rent the cabin for a discounted price and fish our water for free . Retail on this is $250.00 per day , with a group of four you get it for $50.00 per man . There has been one Rocky Brook salmon caught this week as well .

Wilson’s is pleased to report that fish are on the move . Fresh sea-run brook trout ( Upper Miramichi Run ) are hitting as far upriver as Doaktown which means McNamee anglers should expect the big trout within a day or so . I have a confirmed report of a “Rocky Brook ” salmon landed here just yesterday .The Rocky Brook salmon seem to be the most difficult to catch but they are well worth the effort , so get yourself on the water to enjoy this beautiful June weather and great water . The Miramichi seems to be about average height but I find the Cains a little low . The trout on the Cains will move allong anyway but it will be interesting to see how the low water is going to affect their progress through the month of June .

Fly-fishing conditions and other general information at Wilson’s on the Miramichi River . As expected , the water conditions are near perfect , dropping slowly and clear & cold . The cold temps do not help with the native brook trout fishing but this is normal for the period . We are doing well on the trout during evening hours after a warm day though . The river is in superb form as we draw near to (more…)

John and I hit the lower Cains on Wed , putting our 28 foot jet canoe in at the Route 123 highway bridge on excellent water and high hopes of getting into a few trout . We motored straight to Muzroll the first night and then fished from there to Sabies River on day two . The water was good and weather perfect but the sea-run trout were not in yet and for some reason the local ( black trout ) were not in the taking mood . We even took our chances and motored up the Sabies to the first set of rapids , to find out that the big canoe was as long as what the river is wide , but I managed to turn around and got back down without incident . We did not fish the Sabies River itself, just the mouth and again no trout taken . On day three we motored on to the Miramichi at Blackville but to our disappointment the wind was too strong to cast a fly on the big water and the two locals we did run into reported no big trout yet either . There are reports of sea-run brook trout in the tide water so if everything remains normal we should be getting into them very soon .

Wilson’s on the Miramichi River is still easy to get to by air or road , but travellers need to be aware that as of June 1st , 2009 all people going into the US will be required to have a valid passport . That is the same rule for US residents that are returning home from the Miramichi . Be prepared , find out the facts when travelling outside of your home country , we would hate to see your trip hit a snag because you were not informed .

miramichi-fly-fishing.jpg
Wilson’s Miramichi River fly-fishing report as of May 11th . We had another heavy rain late last week which brought the river up again. We had good fishing for both salmon and local trout on Friday then the high water hit .The high water is great for the soon to arrive “Rocky Brook Salmon” and word is that there are Sea-run brook trout in the lower system now . Some people will be tempted to fish for the trout with a 5 wt., but be aware you don’t want to hook a rocky brook salmon with a trout rod . Even the big sea-run trout can be a challenge on light gear , so stick to a 7 or 8 wt. for the next few weeks . We are still seeing a fair number of spring salmon but tactics will change almost on a daily basis now .

Wilson’s Guides Promote Orvis Helios Rods
Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Wilson’s on the Miramichi River is so impressed with the new Orvis Helios rods that we are teaming up with the Orvis company to bring you what we firmly believe to be the “best damn rod on the market today” ( Karl Wilson – fifth generation Miramichi River guide ). Wilson’s guides are the real pros and after putting numerous Helios rods through the paces fly-fishing for Atlantic Salmon on the Miramichi River in 2008 , they are convinced that every angler should have one of these fantastic rods in their kit . Check out the Orvis link for details on how you can own one of these beauties FOR FREE.

Mark Small holds his first grilse of the year , and best of all he hooked it on a new rod he just got for his birthday . I am proud to say that Mark is part of a new generation of anglers who gladly release all their salmon . This attitude will go a long way in the preservation of the Atlantic salmon , and in general our planet . Mark is a dedicated and successful athlete , and student , but balances out his busy life by going fishing with his family . What better way to wind down after the playoffs than to go fly-fishing with your Dad .

miramichi-big-salmon.jpg
Bill and Bob made it over yesterday for an afternoon of fishing and as you can see were very successful . This beauty is one of five fish hooked , the strange thing is the boy’s used two completely different approach’s . Bill used a fast sink shooting- head line with a dark fly ( hooked three down deep) and Bob used a full floating line and a bright colored fly ( hooked two on top ) . We were seeing many fish in close to shore but the big salmon were taken in the heavy water casting long and stripping off line , which would indicate the big fish are moving and the smaller grilse are still in close to shore and back water areas .

miramichi-shore-lunch.jpg
The recent rain brought the water up again and a little dirty yesterday but it is dropping already . The water level in general is still above normal but there are plenty of fish to keep anglers happy . Our best luck seems to be on the Renous Special , or a variation of it as long as it has green and yellow and silver . Some guest’s are carrying two rods in the boat , one with a heavy sink tip and the other with a medium sink tip . Fish are still taking in the bogan water and edges and if you don’t mind pulling your fly out of the submerged bushes allong shore you can take grilse as the fly comes out . The old fashioned wood fire shore lunch is still very popular with our guest’s . The old timers called it “boiling the kettle” which is exactly what we do , we brew your coffee in a tin kettle and cook your meal in antique fry pans . There is nothing better than the old shore lunch after a morning of fighting salmon .
