As expected our summer salmon season kicks off in true Miramichi style. The water is at an ideal height under cool and cloudy skies this Monday morning . The weekend fishing was fantastic with three large salmon between 14 and 18 pounds taken on Friday and Saturday. Sunday brought sunny skies and a bit warmer temps resulting in the fish slowing down for a rest during the mid day period, but as the sun dipped in the evening both grilse and salmon were once again active. Our long range weather forecast for the week is near perfect promising good fishing.
We still have room for a few rods next week so take advantage of some last minute discounts.
The river this week is still app. 8 inches above normal, and that is “GOOD NEWS ” for Wilson’s. Unlike the lower stretch of the Miramichi , our pools at McNamee are doing very well. Wilson’s has an advantage over most down river camps by owning nearly five miles of frontage ( 16 private pools ) with a number of pools that do best in high water . And of course our expert guides can make or break you trip under any condition. Fish are still pooled up in holding water and we are getting into them best during the morning shift. Even with the cool and higher than normal water the Bomber seems to be still working. It appears that there are a few fresh run grilse still coming in on this great water. We have several openings for August remaining and anglers can take advantage of our discounted August rates.
New Brunswicker’s are experiencing a very wet and dreary month of June so far, ask any fly fisherman though and you will see a smile from ear to ear. The river is in superb shape and still about 12 inches above normal . These great conditions are paving the way for good fishing for late June and July. We are catching fish now, mostly salmon but the grilse are showing up too. Cool temps, perfect conditions, the run is on. The Cains is still a little too high for good dry fly fishing but nymphs and streamers are still working well. Looks like July is going to be the best period for dry’s. Biggest Sea-run brook trout taken so far this month was 26 inches. Plenty of fish in the 12- 19 inch range though .
NEWS FLASH , you have all heard the saying “you should have been here last week ” well I am reporting today that the next 4- 7 days is going to be fantastic at Wilson’s on the Miramichi River. The cold water pools are packed with fish, and many of which are large MSW Salmon. After weeks of near perfect conditions for migrating salmon and then with warm temps this past week, all cold water holding pools along the river are filled. NOW THE BIG NEWS, our weather forecast for the coming days is rainy and cool which will move hundreds of salmon along. Wilson’s have openings and our guides are standing by. Don’t miss this opportunity. Check out the weather report on Wilson’s River Report page .
Our best week to date has turned into a week of hot weather and the fish are seeking refuge in the cold water. The water height is still ideal at McNamee, app 6 inches above mid July levels and all feeder streams and brooks are well above normal too. The great water should get us through any warm weather. We are still seeing a good number of MSW salmon and the grilse are in great shape as well. Our talented guides can make the difference whether or not you catch fish on the Miramichi River in these conditions. Fly of the week is #6 bomber .
Reporting fair to good angling in most pools at Wilson’s this week. The high water combined with cool temps every few days has resulted in plenty of fish moving. The warm days are producing well in the mornings but the hot afternoon hot sun turns off many pools. A few recent heavy thunderstorms have turned the water dirtier than usual forcing anglers to be a little more creative in their approach. It is always helps to have a “good guide ” in times like that. As long as the water remains at a decent height we should expect good fishing even if the air does heats up.
This is just what we have been waiting for, plenty of rain and cool temps combined
with a big run of fish. The water is still 8- 10 inches above normal, which is tough on many pools along the Miramichi but at Wilson’s we are lucky to have enough variety of water that our guest’s are enjoying good fishing despite. Our professional guides are adapt at teaching you how to catch fish in all water conditions. Our guides don’t fish for you, they teach you to do it right. As the water warms up a bit, which slows the migration down, and the river drops off to a normal summer level, anglers at Wilson’s will defiantly have the advantage. We have 16 private pools along a 5 mile stretch and most of these pools produce fish daily. Fly of the week was a # 4 Green Machine with white calf tail.
It never fails, just when you think everything is perfect, as was the case on Sunday, July 2 having great fishing and weather. Then the heavens opened wide and we woke up Monday morning with a 3- 4 foot raise of water and anglers in despaire. The water should clear up quickly and will drop in a few days. The water on the Cains is high but still fishable. On a positive note, the high water will move the big July run of salmon well up into the river system for us.
Happy Canada Day to all. Wilson’s is celebrating Canada Day under cool sky’s and perfect water conditions. The past three days has been very hot though with no fish taken till this morning. Lower parts of the river are reporting a big run of fish on the move again with these cools temps so we are expecting much improved fishing as well. July 2- 8 should be great and we still have a few spaces available , contact me direct for details on some terrific discounts.
