At times in this sport, we get too much of a good thing.

As it sometimes goes in this sport, we get too much of a good thing. Overnite
on June 10th brought us nearly 3 inches of rain, resulting in the river up app 3 feet above normal on both the Miramichi and Cains Rivers. This is obviously good for the water table but sure put the brakes on any productful fishing for a few days. Some rivers in southern NB are running chocolate brown indicating some major erosion somewhere up stream, but our two local rivers here appear to be normal, very high and fast but no sign of major erosion. We should be back on the water soon with tons of happy fish fresh from the ocean. As the water drops and warms up on the Cains the big sea-run brook trout will pool up and be ready for a dry fly, this week it looks like sink tip lines and streamers .

“Rocky Brook Salmon” coming through right on time.
Thursday, June 8th, 2006

Just as expected the “Rocky Brook Salmon ” are coming through right on time. This beautiful 20 pound hen fish was taken by Bill Wilkinson at Little Dudley Pool on June 7th , our first bright salmon of the season. The water has been high but dropping just right. Bill also had terrific fishing on the Cains for Sea- run brook trout hooking and releasing 17 fish between 12 and 18 inches. As the water drops from this recent rain we should be hitting the Cains at the perfect time. The Miramichi is still a little high but really , just how we like it going into the summer season .

Heavy rain over weekend, a blessing for the long haul….
Monday, June 5th, 2006

Heavy rain over the weekend was a blessing for the long haul, but messed up the first signs of Salmon fishing this month. We began picking up salmon on the Miramichi Thursday night on the lower pools then a wash- out this morning. The raise in water is just what we need though and the timing is perfect for our June fishing. As the water began rising on the Cains last night , the Sea-run trout were hitting big wholly-buggers high up on the bars in fast moving water . Nice trout ranging from 12 – 19 inches smashing the fly just as it hit the water . The summer migration into the headwaters is obviously in full swing and 10 days early .
