Due to the early ice out ( late March ) and warmer weather , the fish are most all
gone from the upper Miramichi. Jack O’Brien was lucky on this evening with two
nice salmon hooked and this one landed . This 33 inch beauty took a grey ghost
on a cast into the heavy water between two small islands. The Wilson lodge is still dedicated to fly-fishing , unlike some areas of the lower Miramichi where it is common to sit on your butt and “TROLL ” from a moving boat . Luckily for us , due to many small islands, channels , pockets and even some big water , the most productful and most enjoyable method for fishing Wilson’s “PRIVATE ” water is for the “Real ” Fly-Fishermen to stand and cast . This method may be a little more challenging but we promote fly-fishing not trolling. All our guides are professional( Guide One )and DO NOT FISH IN YOUR BOAT, this is your time to learn from a “real professional guide “, this is your time to fish . And we catch almost as many fish here as the trollers do
down river and in a less crowded and much more pleasant fishing atmosphere .
After nearly a week of cold east wind and rain anglers were rewarded with perfect weather and good fishing over the weekend. The water is getting down and clearing up substantially .The fish are jumping and rolling as they would in mid May therefore guiding and fishing techniques must adapt . Wilson’s is still reporting fair to good angling with more grilse than salmon . Personally this is the time of the spring season that I prefer becasue the fish hit the fly more aggressively and jump much more than during the earlier period . Not as many takes but a much better fight when it does happen . Stay tuned as we near the upcoming Sea- Run Brook Trout fishery, which we expect to be early this year as well .
LEARN TO CATCH MORE BIG SALMON
If you want to learn to be a better angler in tough weather conditions, then come to Wilson’s. We will introduce you to some of the most experienced guides who know how to catch more big fish. When fishing the Miramichi River in the wind and rain and ever changing conditions you need to know more than the average angler in order to be the most successful. During the past week our guides outfished all other guides in our area. These boy’s know the secrets and they know how to make you a better angler. If you are going to invest the time and money into this sport then you should have every advantage going, and that is exactly what you can expect when fishing at Wilson’s. Our guides are some of the best on the river, they take their job
seriously and make every effort to “Teach You ” how to do it right.
Good news for anglers coming in over the next few days. The harsh east wind and rain has stopped and the river is in superb shape. Not too high and very clean. Despite the wind and rain over the past three days we still had good fishing . Grilse numbers are still higher than MSW salmon but with the water dropping and conditions improving we are sure to get into more of the big trophy size ( 35 – 42 inch ) fish soon. Weather forecasts are ideal so bring your sun screen.
As a result of the near perfect river conditions and evidence of good numbers of salmon around , we have decided to make a special offer to last minute bookings for the next three weeks . Depending on the number of people in the party we are offering up to 35% off the retail price for our “all inclusive package” and even more for certain “housekeeping packages” . Contact me soon for more details on this great offer. The fishing is superb and you can’t beat the deal.
Keep an eye on Wilson’s River Report for more great deals, such as our Spring Bear hunt and the ever popular Trophy Sea- Run Brook trout , both happening during the month of June .
As expected the fishing was fantastic at Wilson’s on our opening day . A poll taken of ten boats on our five mile private stretch showed most anglers averageing 9 fish landed . The fish are in remarkable condition giving anglers a great show with many jumps and the usual long runs. Average length of MSW salmon so far is in the 30 inch range . The water conditions on the 15th was near perfect and a beautiful sunny day , but as fishing sometimes goes , rain overnite brought the river up and much dirtier . A north east wind and cold rain today, April 16th , sent most anglers to the warmth and comfort of their cabins to catch up on their talents with a card game or some much deserved sleep after a cold morning on the river . As most of us know , the success of a fishing trip is not necessarily based on just the numbers of salmon landed
Atlantic Salmon fishing on the Miramichi at McNamee is set to go . The ice is out and the river is about normal for the weather . Some ice is hanging on along the high banks There is very little snow locally but the headwaters areas still have considerable amounts so we don’t want warm weather yet .The water is not too high yet so with cooler temps and no heavy rain we should be in for fantastic fishing in just 5 days .
I came across a copy of a news paper report dated March 1972 . It listed recordings of ice runs from 1935 through 1971 at Boiestown . The earliest ice run for that period was March 22, 1937 and the latest was May 2nd , 1961 . Average ice-run dates seemed to be around April 15th . Another interesting note was that the angling season would open with the ice-run . The best fishing as reported over the years by guides is always after the river begins to warm up ,
which can change almost daily as the weather may change .
As a result of the warm weather last week followed by rain on the weekend , it appears that the majority of the ice has moved on the Miramichi . We still have tons of ice in the side channels and bogans so a big “freshet ” is needed before good fishing can be expected . The river height is still fairley low at this point in time but with 12 days to go before opening day we will surely have the river cleaned out and in good shape for April 15th .
The Miramichi at our McNamee location is slowly melting away. We have had warm weather for the past three days which opened up most main channels and the water has started to rise slightly .We are due for rain within a few days so depending on the volume and the temperatures we are likely to see a major run withn the next week . We hope for a good raise of water by April 10 or so to get the heavy ice off the banks and out of the bogans . We will post new photo’s soon as things develop.
